Condensation Lines

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of an HVAC system It’s easy to overlook your HVAC system over the years.

It’s easy to overlook your HVAC system over the years. In locations like Southern Ohio, there are many environmental factors that can make cleaning your system a priority. The factor we will focus on today is the buildup of algae and debris in your condensation line. Buildup in your system can cause blockages and eventually leakage. Checking and cleaning your condensation line can save you from costly repairs and potential water damage.

What is a condensation line?

Your HVAC system or furnace also operates as a dehumidifier. They have a reservoir that allows the moisture from the home to collect, but eventually, the moisture that is collected needs to be removed. The condensation line allows for that moisture to be drained underneath the home. The issue with this system is that is prone to developing algae and blockages over time without being cleaned.

Cleaning options

Cleaning your condensation line has multiple approaches, here are a few:

  • Using a long pipe/tubing brush to clean. These brushes have nylon bristles which allow the lines to be cleaned without damaging the line itself.
  • Pour a mixture of hot water and vinegar down the drain. This allows the mixture to run down the entirety of the line, removing algae.
  • Vacuuming out blockages. If you have an option to connect an end of the line to a shop vacuum, this may be a good option to remove blockages.

If your system already has faced a blockage and has led to water damage in your home, there’s a pro for that. At SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties, we have the experience to make your water loss "Like it never even happened." We are available 24/7 and can be contacted at (740) 286-2550, call today!

Cooking Fires

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of a pot sitting on top of a stove Something as simple as cooking a meal can lead to a disaster.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of loss in residential fires. Fire departments respond to an average of nearly 190,000 cooking fires a year. Of those fires, an estimated 170 deaths, 3,000 injuries, and $443 million in property damage were a result. This goes to show that even something as simple as cooking a meal can lead to a disaster. Here are a few tips brought to you by the United States Fire Administration (USFA) to help make sure that this trend does not continue:

  • Stay in the kitchen: leaving the room while cooking at high temperatures could easily start a fire.
  • Set a timer: setting a timer allows us to not get distracted while cooking.
  • Keep flammable materials away from the stove: when cooking substances like grease can splatter and catch close-by items on fire.
  • Turn pot handles toward the stove: turning the handles of your pots and pans towards the stove will help prevent someone from accidentally bumping and spilling food/liquids.
  • Keep a lid on hand: if a grease fire does begin, quickly place a lid over the top of the pan to cover the fire from spreading.

If your home has experienced any fire, smoke, or soot damage as a result of smoke damage, don’t hesitate to call the pros! SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties are here and ready to help 24/7. Call us today at (740) 286-2550!

  • Keep a supply: Keep a good collection of items such as tissues, wipes, and hand sanitizer to make sure you have enough to last the season.
  • Practice good hygiene: it is common to think it is common knowledge, but it is still important to remember the fundamentals. Make sure to wash hands often, cover your cough, and keep your distance if you are not feeling well.
  • Plan: someone getting sick can sometimes be inevitable. Make sure you or your work has a plan in place as far as absence and preventative measures.
  • Stay home: if you do become sick, the best thing you can do is to stay home. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others.

Furnace Maintenance

10/14/2021 (Permalink)

Close-up shot of furnace burners in action Routine care can save your furnace from unnecessary strain and potential breakdowns

With the fall weather quickly approaching, the best time to clean and maintain your furnace is now instead of waiting until you need heat. Routine care can save your furnace from unnecessary strain and potential breakdowns. Here are 5 inspection tips to keep your furnace running smoothly:

  1. Shut off your system: we know this seems obvious, but it is crucial that you shut off the power and fuel supply from the furnace before any work is done.  Record the location of the shut-off valve and the circuit breaker in case of an emergency.
  2. Vacuum and clean: clean the burner and blower cavities of your furnace (also the blower itself) along with the combustion chamber and remove as much debris as possible. This debris can affect performance and material left in the combustion chamber can cause corrosion.
  3. Inspect flue pipe: check for any dents and/or punctures and repair with foil tape. Any corroded areas should be replaced.
  4. Change your air filter: Changing your air filter routinely is important to ensure a well-operating furnace and clean air in your house. During the winter season, make sure you are replacing it often. If you are planning on having your ductwork cleaned by your friends at SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties, be sure to have it done prior to replacing your filters. Duct cleaning blows out all excess dust and debris from your vents and a good amount will cling to the air filter in the process.
  5. Clean your vents:  If you do not plan to have SERVPRO professionally clean and sanitize your ductwork, it is still necessary to have clean vents. Take a vacuum hose and remove as much dust, pet hair, etc. from your vents.

Hopefully, these tips allow for this fall’s furnace inspection to go by smoothly and make for a warm clean home this winter. If you have any questions or require our professionals to make duct cleaning a breeze, feel free to call SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties anytime at (740) 286-2550!

Gutters & Drainage Systems

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

gutter filled with leaves and a baseball Many often overlook the importance of maintaining and cleaning your gutters/drainage systems

With the fall season finally here, it may be time to take a look at your drainage system and prepare for all of the fall leaves that are about to come. Many often overlook the importance of maintaining and cleaning your gutters/drainage systems. The main purpose of this system is to allow water to run off of your roof and away from your property. If this system becomes clogged or damaged, it can create moisture buildup around your property. Moisture buildup can eventually lead to water damage and rot in your home.

Here are some tips if you plan on cleaning this fall:

  • Plan ahead: The weather can be a little unpredictable here in Ohio, but try to allow a few days without rain to dry all of the debris in the gutters before cleaning.
  • Ladder safety: When dealing with heights, practicing good ladder safety is crucial. If you are unable to safely reach the necessary heights, consider contacting a professional cleaning service.
  • Downspouts: While you are cleaning, make sure to check your downspout for any damage or clogs. Also, check where your rainwater is running off to, you may consider extending your drain pipe to redirect the water. Crawlspaces are often victims of poorly directed downspouts.
  • Avoid hazards: Before tackling this task, check for any potential hazards such as electrical lines. If the situation appears unsafe, consider contacting a professional cleaning service.

Maintaining a clean, healthy gutter/ drainage system will help prolong the life of your system along with your home. With these tips, we hope that having your gutters cleaned (whether by you or a professional) is now becomes a simpler process. If you are facing water damage inside of your home or crawlspace as a result of your drainage system, don’t hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO! SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties are available 24/7 and always here to help.

Refrigerator Water Lines

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

photo of a kitchen refrigerator Refrigerator water lines can commonly become damaged or disconnected, causing a water leak.

One of the more common issues that come with modern refrigerators, is damage to the water lines, causing water damage. The water line can become disconnected or damaged, creating a small leak. This often goes for long periods due to the low volume of water that leaks out, causing slow but progressive water damage.

One way to help prevent water-damaged floors is to check and maintain your fridge often. Make sure to clean behind and around the and check the line for any signs of damage and assure that it is connected properly. If your line is showing signs of damage, it should be replaced. Now might be a good time to upgrade your existing plastic water line with a more durable, braided metal replacement.

Another option would be to install a drain pan underneath your refrigerator. These are simple to install, cost-effective, and would prevent any water from sitting on your flooring. These come in a variety of sizes, materials, and features that would meet almost any situation.

Lastly, another option would be to install a water sensor. Smart sensors like this have made great advances in the past years. Placing a sensor behind your refrigerator or inside of a drain pan would allow you to receive immediate updates if it comes into contact with water, allowing you to stop the issue in its tracks.

If you are currently facing the result of a damaged water line, don’t hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties. We are ready and willing to help with your water restoration needs 24/7. Call us today at (740) 286-2550 for more information!

Smoke Alarms

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke alarm going off Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.

A simple smoke detector could make the difference between life and death with a residential fire. Having an operational smoke alarm system in your home is crucial when it comes to protecting yourself, your family, and your home. It is required by law to have an operating smoke alarm on each floor of your home (including basements) along with another alarm in each bedroom. Smoke alarms require very little to no maintenance depending on the type of alarm you purchase. If you decide to purchase a standard battery-operated model, the alarm itself will last 10 years and will require you to change the battery every 6 months. Choosing a hardwired or lithium-ion battery option, however, requires no battery replacement and will just need to be replaced every 10 years. This simple upkeep is proven to save lives, here are some statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to back it up (some may surprise you):

  • Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms
  • More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
  • The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

Make sure to do your part by checking in on your alarm system. If you are facing fire damage, don’t hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties at (740) 286-2550.

Fallen Trees

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

a tree that fell on top of a house Make sure you understand what situations are covered before it happens.

It happens far too often; during a windy day or a thunderstorm, a tree gives way to the elements and is uprooted and falls on a house causing major roof damage. When something like this happens, a million things can run through a homeowner’s head. One of the most common thoughts: how can I afford to fix this? In this article, we will discuss the scenarios when your insurance company will/won’t cover the damages of a fallen tree.

  • When a healthy tree falls due to high winds/storms and damages your home, a standard homeowners insurance policy will more than likely cover it.
  • When an unhealthy and neglected tree falls, it most likely will not be covered by insurance. This is the case because a neglected tree could fall at any moment and is the responsibility of the homeowner to remove it before any damage is caused.
  • When a tree falls and it does not damage your home, your insurance company typically does not cover debris removal.
  • When a neighbor’s tree falls and lands on your property, your insurance may help pay for repairs if it damages your home.

Understanding your insurance policy and what is and is not covered is an important level of preparedness that many people neglect until it is too late. If you have storm damage in your home don’t hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia today at (740) 286-2550.

Water Heater Tips

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

dripping water heater Your water heater is a key piece to your plumbing system, routine inspections can keep it running properly.

Water heaters are one of the three most common household appliances to fail and cause damage to your home. Along with washing machines and toilets, these appliances alone contribute to almost $700 million in property damage per year. One of the best ways for a homeowner to better prevent these issues is to perform routine maintenance along with having preventative measures in place.

Your water heater is a key piece to your plumbing system, routine inspections can keep it running properly.

Here are some tips for the next time you check on your water heater:

  • Check all fittings and valves for any moisture
  • Make sure the temperature/pressure relief valve is working.
    • This valve being blocked is one of the leading causes of a water tank explosion.
  • Placing a pan underneath the tank as a catch is useful for protecting against small leaks
  • Placing a moisture alarm near the tank can alert you early on for a leak.
  • Check your anode rod and heating elements for pitting, replace if damaged.
  • Finally, flush and clear out the sediment in your tank once a year

Completing these steps can help improve your water heater’s performance, extend its life and reduce your energy bill. Most importantly it can help prevent costly property damage in the event of an appliance failure. If you do happen to face water loss as a result of an appliance failure, know that SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties is here to help you with all of your water loss needs. photo of a rainy day in the city We are a 24/7 emergency service that is dedicated to controlling any sized disaster.

The common saying of “when it rains, it pours” could not be truer at times. There are countless situations where not only does a homeowner have to deal with an unforeseen disaster such as water lines breaking, fires, or storms but they also then have to face the repercussions of those losses to put the icing on the cake. Secondary damage is the result of allowing the original issue to create more problems that could have been avoided. Weatherizing Doors & Windows

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

rotten window trim falling apart When not properly addressed, moisture buildup can create many issues

When it comes to weatherizing your home, owners do this mainly with the expectation of improvements in temperature regulation and your energy bill. Though that may be true, what commonly gets overlooked is that weatherizing such as caulking gaps and seams on windows and doors can prevent moisture damage from storms. When window and door casings are not properly sealed, they leave the opportunity for moisture to get into those seams and sit. This moisture sitting over long periods of time can eventually lead to wood rot around those fixtures, causing all sorts of issues. Simply adding a generous bead of caulking around all seams around your windows and doors can create a protective barrier that can keep excess water out.

When moisture damage like this is ignored, it can ultimately cause more serious problems such as rainwater from storms getting into your home through these areas and then causing water damage inside the home. If you ever face a situation similar to this, SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties are available 24/7 and we are dedicated to helping our customers as best we can. If you are facing this issue currently don’t hesitate to call us today at (740) 286-2550!

Psychrometry (The Science of Drying)

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO crew placing drying equipment Understanding how moisture and humidity behave allows us to plan the best drying process.

Knowing the fundamentals is crucial for any successful job. Until homeowners are dealing with a water loss or you are in the business of restoration, most people do not think about the science behind drying homes and their materials. Being able to properly control your work environment and achieving desired humidity, moisture content and temperature is key to getting the job done right. SERVPRO of Jackson, Ross, Athens, and Gallia Counties educates its employees on how to properly implement the psychrometry of drying into our daily tasks and procedures. Knowing how moisture and humidity works allow us to bring in the proper equipment (and quantity) to get your home dry again in the fastest and safest way possible.

In psychrometry, warm/dry air that is properly circulated throughout the affected areas allows the moisture to be kicked up into the air and then can be dried by our dehumidifier. Once the moisture in the air reaches the dehumidifier, it will condensate and be taken out of the air.

Studying and understanding these concepts allow us to come in prepared and ready to get your home “Like it never even happened.” If you are currently experiencing a water issue, do not hesitate to contact your SERVPRO of Jackson, Ross, Athens, and Gallia Counties at (740) 286-2550.

Dryer Vent Inspection

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

Washer and dryer on fire Routine inspections on your dryer can keep it running efficiently and prevent possible safety hazards.

Even though cleaning your dryer’s filter after each cycle is great practice, there is still extra precautions to take to keep your equipment running efficiently and your home safe from a possible disaster. Even though your lint trap does catch the majority of the loose material from your laundry, there are still some that pass through. The lint that does manage to get past collects within your dryer vents. This can eventually cause your dryer to not vent air properly, leading it to not dry as well. More important than a poor-performing dryer, this material poses a potential fire hazard if exposed to too much heat.

Here are some tips to keep a clean and efficient drying system:

  • Brush and vacuum out excess lint from the dryer vent
  • Check your dryer hose for any dents or punctures
  • Metal ducting offers better fire prevention
  • Make sure the vent hood is properly sealed and allows the dryer to breathe without leaving it open to the outside elements
  • Installing a dryer safety alarm can warn you of hazardous build-up

We hope that no one has to deal with the disaster of an electrical fire, but if it does happen, rest assured that SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties is here to help. If you have any questions call (740) 286-2550 today.

Roof Inspection Tips

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

Roof being inspected for leaks Your roof protects your home from the outside elements, make sure it is in good condition.

No matter the material (shingles, tin, etc.), your roof is your home’s first line of defense against storms. Before rain clouds loom overhead, now would be a good time to inspect your roof to prevent experiencing possible water damage. Completing maintenance on your roof when necessary is crucial to extend the life of your rooftop and to prevent high-cost damages such as water damage, mold remediation, or high electric bills. Follow these steps when inspecting your roof for damage this spring:

  • Check for visible signs of damage and aging such as sagging, punctures, or missing material on the exterior of the house.
  • Clean your gutters. Gutters direct rain away from your home, protecting it in the process. Make sure to remove any leaves or debris that may block the flow of water and to see if the gutters are properly sealed.
  • Check the attic space for evidence of any water leaks or mold growth.

If there is damage found during your inspection, contacting a trusted roofer would be a wise decision. If there is existing water or mold damage found, SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties is here to assist you 24/7 with our experienced team of production technicians!

Firework Storage Safety

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

Person holding an American flag and a sparkler Fireworks started an estimated 19,500 fires in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires.

It is getting close to the Fourth of July and many Americans are preparing for fireworks to celebrate. Fireworks are fun and exciting, but they can also be very dangerous if not properly handled and stored.

Below are a few tips to make sure your festivities are enjoyable but also responsible:

Keep water close

Having a water source or bucket close by is a vital safety precaution when letting off fireworks. The water can be used to soak the fireworks after firing to prevent reigniting along with putting out accidental fires.

Proper containers

When storing leftover explosives (before and after the event) make sure that they are being contained in a non-flammable, plastic container; no cardboard.

Storage environment

When putting away fireworks for long periods of time, it is advised to store them in dry cool areas. Storing them in places such as attic spaces, garages, and sheds is not recommended due to their ability to reach high temperatures that could cause an accidental ignition.

Away from children

Last but not least, make sure when putting away explosives, make sure they are out of reach from children. Having fireworks stored in a safe, locked location is key to keep them out of curious hands.

We hope these tips help keep your Fourth of July safe from any issue so that you can properly enjoy the celebration of our nation’s independence. Even though we take precautions, we understand that disaster can happen regardless. SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross, Athens & Gallia Counties are available 24/7 and always here to help!

Understanding Smoke and Soot Damage

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot damage to the walls and ceiling of a residential property Extensive smoke and soot damage to this Ross County home.

It finds all the cracks and crevices, and goes everywhere. Smoke and soot is extremely invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Did You Know? Here are some facts about smoke and soot:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson and Ross, Athens and Gallia Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Preparing Now for Spring Flood Risks and Water Damage Cleanup

3/17/2021 (Permalink)

While spring brings warmer weather and longer days, it also brings a mix of conditions that include heavy rains and severe storms, increasing the risk of flooding. Be prepared, know the risks and when to take action to protect your family, your home and your business before you find yourself in the middle of a weather event.

Spring flood risks

FEMA provides education materials about what you should know concerning spring flood risks at https://www.ready.gov/sites/default/files/Spring_Flood_Fact_Sheet.pdf. Some of the highlights included in this material are as follows:

Spring Thaw. Warmer temperatures and resulting snow melt can produce large amounts of runoff in a short period of time, as each cubic foot of compacted snow contains gallons of water. During the early spring, frozen land prevents melting snow or rainfall from seeping into the ground. The water then runs off the surface and flows into lakes, streams, and rivers, causing excess water to spill over their banks. Add seasonal storms to the mix, and the result is often severe spring flooding.

Spring Rains. Spring storms can bring several inches of precipitation in just hours or can stall out over an area for days. These heavy rains can lead to severe flooding by oversaturating the ground, overfilling storm drains, or causing rivers to spill over their banks or levees.

Everyone is at risk for water damage. Preparing now can save you hours of headache later.

  • Property owners should prepare now. Contact SERVPRO of Jackson and Ross, Athens and Gallia Counties about an Emergency Ready Plan.
  • Conduct a thorough inventory of your home or business.  Document your belongings with video and photos, in the event these are damaged by water intrusion.
  • If water damage occurs, quick response matters. Call us directly at 740-286-2550 or use our ERP app. Materials holding moisture can develop mold within 24 to 48 hours. Delay can turn water mitigation into mold remediation in just a short window of time.
  • Our team will help you file your insurance claim. We will take photos of the water intrusion and keep detailed lists of all damaged or lost personal property.
  • Allow us to plan for the repair following the water damage cleanup. No need to contact a second contractor for reconstruction. We've got you covered.

SERVPRO of Jackson and Ross, Athens and Gallia Counties provides emergency services around the clock. We're your local water damage restoration experts.

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 - #1 in Restoration Services SERVPRO #1 in Restoration Services and #10 Overall in Entrepreneur Magazine's annual Franchise 500 rankings

#1 in Restoration Services for the 21st year and #10 overall in Entrepreneur Magazine’s annual Franchise 500 rankings of the best franchises in America. Travis and I are proud to be a part of this company! For nearly 13 years our local franchise team has served the people of SE Ohio. We're thankful for the support we receive from HQ, those who trust us to care for their homes and businesses and the true heroes on our team who wear the logo on their chest everyday in the field.

In a time when many businesses were left to scale back or temporarily close doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SERVPRO teams were hard at work helping to keep doors open and families safe. This is just one example of why SERVPRO has been named the #1 franchise in the cleaning and restoration industry for the 21st year in a row!

When we decided to purchase our first franchise location back in 2008, one of the most important factors we considered was the nature of the corporate company. It mattered to us that the people providing guidelines and leadership for our team were not shy about their faith in Jesus, their pride in community and country, and their commitment to family which extended to the thousands of franchises across the country. Throughout the years we've seen these principles displayed proudly and we delight in our decision to become part of the SERVPRO family, that makes helping others our legacy.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. Professionals from SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross Counties are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Protecting Your Home from Frozen and Bursting Pipes

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

Southern Ohio has experienced some record cold temperatures this month. Though you may be taking extra steps to keep yourself warm, SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross Counties wants to remind you to keep your home safe as well.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety reports that pipes generally don't burst from simply freezing - it is actually the buildup of pressure between the frozen water blockage and the closed faucet that causes the pipe to burst.

Here at SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross counties, we care about our customers and want to pass on the following tips to help protect their homes:

1) Let a faucet slowly drip during extreme cold weather (under 20 degrees F) to provide pressure relief on the pipe.  If hot and cold water lines serve a fixture, make sure that both lines are contributing to the drip.

2) If you are planning to travel out of town, take the extra precaution of draining your water system.  To do this, shut off the main water valve and then turn on all fixtures until water stops flowing.  If there is no water in the lines, they can't freeze or burst.

In the event that the worst happens and you come home to a burst pipe and water in your home, SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross Counties provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays.

Faster To Any Size Disaster

Flooding and water damage is very invasive. Leave Mold Remediation to the SERVPRO Professionals

3/15/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a likely found in damp spaces like basements or in often in places where water damage has occurred and not properly dried.

Understanding How Mold Grows and Spreads in Your Home

Mold is one of the most neglected home maintenance problems that can quickly become a catastrophe. Spotting the damage early is the key to safe and effective remediation.

Mold damage restoration is not a DIY project. Efficient and successful remediation is a job for the professionals with years of experience and the right safety equipment. Trying to eliminate mold by yourself can help it spread to unaffected areas amplifying the problem. It is essential to understand the basics of mold and take the right precautions for fast and safe remediation.

What causes mold growth?

Mold begins its life from a microscopic spore; they are like seeds that can germinate in the right conditions. Interestingly, mold spores are present everywhere. So, it may not be possible to eliminate them entirely, but it is entirely possible to prevent the creation of conditions favorable for their germination.

One of the most important conditions for the spores to germinate is moisture. If the surfaces contain a high level of humidity, the spores can absorb it, swell and germinate giving rise to a network of filamentous structures called hyphae. Some of the hyphae grow into the surface providing an anchor for the network, while others can bear spores on their tops.

If the network of the hyphae is disturbed, these spores can become airborne and settle in other parts of your home. While cleaning the mold growth, SERVPRO professionals use a barrier system to prevent these spores from reaching the uncontaminated parts of your home. They also have the necessary equipment to clean the settled spores and prevent them from reaching other parts of your home.

Mold loves warm and moist environments.

Mold requires the right combination of temperature and moisture to germinate and grow. The ideal temperature being between 68 and 86 degrees. With these conditions in place, the settled sores can quickly spread.

The most important thing to control is the moisture level. SERVPRO Professionals can determine the residual moisture level in your home using state-of-the-art moisture sensing equipment. If the levels are high, they can correct them by addressing the underlying problem.

Call SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross Counties today to schedule an inspection.

Puff Backs

3/15/2018 (Permalink)

Soot can be stubborn and requires specific methods based on the source. Leave the cleanup to your local SERVPRO professionals.

How Do Puff Backs Occur?

Puff backs occur due to a furnace malfunction and causes soot to spread throughout your home. This usually occurs with oil burning furnaces that have resulted in an explosion.

Removal Process:

Soot should likely be removed by a professional cleaning service in order to prevent further damage.  Specific products are used during the removal process and necessary precautions taken to protect other unaffected areas of your home.

Prevention:

One simple method of preventing a puff back is by constantly making sure the oil heating system is dust free. Another way for ultimate protection is to have your heating system inspected and serviced annually.

Professional Service:

If this happens to you, call SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross Counties at 740-286-2550. Our team offers multiple cleaning services to residential and commercial structures. Serving Jackson, Ross, Vinton, and Pike Counties and neighboring areas.

Fire, Smoke and Soot Damage

12/1/2017 (Permalink)

Every fire damage is unique. SERVPRO of Jackson & Ross has the equipment, expertise & experience to restore your home or business. Call 740-286-2550

It goes everywhere.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Athens & Gallia Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup?

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

Call Today 740-286-2550

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Do You Have a Mold Problem?

6/10/2016 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
